Resolutions

I had one resolution going into 2011 and that was to graduate from college. I accomplished that & it's pretty hard to believe considering that I have trouble finishing what i've started! For 2012, I have one blog-related resolution that I will share with you!

#1 Outfit posts : I've always wanted to post them but have never done it! Speaking of outfits, i'll try to be more colorful, Sportmax style. Loved the collection, the textiles used were innovative and intriguing!

My style icon icon will continue to be Eszter from Stylorectic. She's so great and inspires me a lot!

I hope you know that this will not be an easy one for me! I will have to get creative & will try my best to make it interesting for you :)

2012 will be a good year for many people, I just know it!

Picture overload, sorry about that :/ this is pretty much my 2011 year through instagram (aka shitty quality picture generator) You gotta love instagram though, it's truly addicting! Anyways, i was gonna give you guys a little description for each pic but i'll spare you. Here's some hints if you want to try to find the pics to match : I got 3 tattoos this year, got my car broken into (therefore my beloved Raybans pictured somewhere in here, where stolen), got a dog, went to three six mafia's concert and almost got shot & moved to a new neighborhood! Yep, that sums it up! I'm still working on my 2012 resolutions so i'll get back you with those :)

A few weeks ago I got the chance to meet an artist which I very much admire, Elaine Ho. She makes the most amazing jewelry and i've been eyeing her pieces for years! After seeing her at a local craft show, we chatted back and forth and she kindly agreed for an interview with Valentsine! I will also be hosting a giveaway for two lucky readers! Read on ♥

1. Basic info (Name, where you're from, etc)

I grew up in Calgary (18 years in the same house!!), took a couple of jewelry courses at ACAD when I was in high school... went to NYC for 4 years to study fashion design at Parsons, worked in nyc during & after I graduated, then I came to mtl on holiday with my expired student visa as well as crappy advice from an immigration lawyer, I was refused entry back into the US and ended up moving to Montreal because it was close to the border. And it kind of worked out because I love mtl.

2. When and why did you start making jewelry?

I wasn't able to find any good jobs in the fashion industry here in mtl & started making & selling my own stuff under the label "roadkill"... mostly leather cuffs & wallets and purses. Leather appliqué accessories with weird sayings like: "I love bacon" or "I like dirty old men". I must have sold hundreds of "I love bacon" t-shirts!

Starting in about 2005, I took a few jewelry classes at the visual arts centre in westmount & started getting into making more jewelry... I had been making little assembled sterling silver & gold filled earrings with semi-precious stones, but now I could make the stuff I really wanted to wear!!! The first three pendants I produced were the deer pendant, the skull w/heart eyes & the dead rabbit.

3. Where do you find inspiration?

I make everything for myself first and then hope that other people will want to wear it too. My current collection is "mineral friends". I used to go to the annual gem and mineral show in Calgary with my mom every single year, it was my favourite thing ever. Now I go to the one in mtl. I've always loved crystals & gems & minerals & so this collection is inspired by I guess rocks & make believe crystalline structures & geometric shapes.

4. Do you collect anything?

I collect cats, i've set the limit to three because I think it's a fine line between loving cats, and being a crazy cat lady. I won't say what side of the line i'm on! I have a giant cat tattoo too! I collect vintage & antique baby doll heads and limbs, west german pottery, vintage chairs, mid century furniture & design objects, antique books & toy guns. I like anything old & unusual.

5. What other hobbies do you have?

I love antiquing & thrifting!!! I'm a part time vintage seller, it's what I do for fun when I need a break from making jewelry. So I love to going to flea markets, thrift stores & church sales... I absolutely love just diving into a pile of dusty junk & the thrill of maybe finding a treasure and hopefully walking out of there without any bedbugs. I just found a vintage black silk valentino dress at a goodwills store for $5. I'm keeping that one for myself. I watch storage wars, american pickers & auction hunters religiously and then a few episodes of "hoarders" to keep myself in check.

6. What handmade possession do you most cherish?

My grandfather made a lamp with part of an old telephone and some found parts. He etched rectangles into the metal base. He loves estate sales & flea markets too! That's probably where I get it from!!

7. Since we are both lovers of cats, How many cats do you have? Tell me about them!

Pepito: I got him the day after I moved to Montreal. I didn't know anyone in the city. My first day here, I found myself an apartment on St-Denis street above the starbucks, went to winners to buy some sheets & then the next day I went to the spca to get myself a cat. He's really old. No one knows his age for sure, he was already a senior cat when I got him in 2004.

Poof: I got her at a pet store near my house. She had been there for a long time already, sitting in a cage, and since she wasn't really a kitten anymore, no one wanted her. She had a cold & had the typical drippy dirty himalayan cat eyes, wasn't looking too hot. She kept getting marked down and was 8 months old when I got her. I know it's really crappy to support pet stores that sell animals, but I felt it was also crappy to have a cat living in a cage for 8 months. I try not to buy from pet stores that sell cats & dogs anymore, but I don't regret getting Poof. She was a steal at $149.99.

Ponyo: She was a stray kitten living under our front porch. Her full name is Fraulein ponyo von mitten. She has extra thumbs. She's a fat indoor cat now, she doesn't like strangers or when you wear shoes indoors.

So ever since I got Karma I'm being stopped every second by people wanting to see/pet/kiss her. She's a sensation *everywhere* we go (I swear, it gets annoying. Do you know how many times i've mentioned her breed over the past month!!!? And she had to be a mix of 3 breeds too lol)

I was always a cat lady, never really cared for dogs, but now it's like i'm part of a whole new crew; the dog-owners. They are all so friendly, asking about Karma etc. Long story short...I love the dog-owner crew & I love being part of it.

Seeing that the logo for this brand is his beloved Jack Russell, well...obviously I was sold! I don't usually blog about menswear (exception) but since I do have some male followers I figured why not! Besides, this is considered eye candy, these undies are hot!

Thought i'd give you a little life update since i've mia for so long! I looked at my pictures from this year and here are some favorites :)

Biggest event of 2011 - Moving into my new apartment! It's small but it's so me and I love every inch of it. Finally resident of the beautiful city of Montreal. I *love* this city.

I live with Coco (remember him!!!?) I left Suki and Stella behind for now (with my mother)

I made the mistake of wanting to be blond. I hated it. Went back to being brunette a month later!

Fell in love with Montreal all over again. Partied like it was 2003. Was single for the first time since I was 17. I felt good this year, i've realized a lot.

Got tattooed. Three times! This is my favorite (and biggest) of them all. It's sort of an appreciation tattoo for Miss Van's art. I got it done on 29.09.11 which was my 22nd birthday.

Last but not least, I got myself a puppy! She makes me laugh so much, I love her to death. Even if it's a lot more work than expected, I made a promise to myself that I would never let her down or disappoint her. She has come so far from the day I got her. She was very scared of humans because of the monster who had her before me. But she has become more trusting towards humans, me especially. She is a pug/boston terrier/cocker spaniel and her name is Karma. The cutest mutt on earth if you ask me!

Then school, work & that's about it! What were your life highlights of 2011? :)

I think i'm back! I've been busier than expected this last year. School really consumed me; thank god I finish in a few weeks!

So this little cabin in a loft inspired me to blog again. I think it's the most adorable little place and would live here without a problem. You can actually rent it 130$ a night if you're ever in Brooklyn. I think I need to get down to NY : )

Here are 4 boards i did for a school project. We are working on designing a collection so we're in the process of gathering inspiration. I've been doing a lot of trend/color/fabric research and these are my 3 favorite colors for spring. The last board represents leather, which also love. Next week, i'm going fabric hunting. I can't wait to show you my sketches and my final board!

I still haven't looked at all the shows yet but from what i've seen so far, i find this season to be very uplifting. Everything is so colorful and energizing! Apparently color is a sign of economy improvement, so that's good news. Anyways, what were your favorite shows for Spring ? I'll be posting my faves soon :)

So i saved up all my pennies, and finally purchased my favorite necklace on Etsyplanet. You knoww, the one i put on my birthday list (you guessed it, nobody got it for me...) I even dedicated a whole post to it here! Well, it's on it's way to my house as i type :) Wheeee!

1. Your name, where are you from ?

jessi taylor, originally from seattle, washington; currently living in her newly adopted hometown of new orleans, louisiana.

2. When/why/how did you get into making jewelry ?

long long ago, when dragons and knights still roamed the land, like many other jewelers i got my start with beads. beads are actually quite awesome. but soon i wanted to make my own pendants, clasps, and other components, and before long i left beads behind almost entirely in favor of brandishing a hammer and flaming torch, yeah!

3. Where do you find inspiration for your jewelry ?

mostly from stories, dreams and books. every piece i make tells a little story of its own, and goes on to create new ones with its wearer. also, i really like stones.

4. Do you collect anything ?

oh my gosh - i really hate having stuff that does not have a purpose. i suppose i collect books, clothing and jewelry; i also have small hoards of knitting needles, exotic spices, and cat whiskers.

5. What other hobbies do you have ?

well, making jewelry is not a hobby for me; it is my livelihood, and my obsession. but - i do have a few hobbies on the side, which include making delicious things to eat, traveling to hot and faraway places, riding my bicycle far and wide, kissing my boyfriend and drinking wine!

6. What handmade possession do you most cherish?

hmmmmm.... i thought about this question a bit, and i guess i don't have favorites. i do, however, try to always make the conscious choice of handmade over mass-produced at every opportunity, to support artists, makers and friends!

So my birthday is in a few weeks and I thought i'd put together a list of things i've been wanting all year for those of you who are feeling a little uninspired. Here it goes...

I want smaller things, like:

- This amazing version of the classic wayfarers (in tortoise, s'il vous plait)

- An instax mini from Urban Outfitters & this pink photo album to contain the awesomeness

- Chloé, eau de parfum and/or La Parisienne by YSL

- Any one of these excessively pretty hand towels from Uguisu

ok ok ok, i'm back! And what a crazy month it was! Sorry for leaving you guys hanging without updates for so long.

I just came back from a lovely trip to Cuba yesterday. Since I didn't eat much down there, I was literally drooling when I saw this. Chocolate, mmm. I found this treasure of a blog just now, one of the best out there if you ask me. I love how the recipes are typed out. And what to say about the photography....flawless.

Definitely worth a look!

I went to the annual Pow Wow this weekend, i hadn't been in ten years! It was my boyfriends first time going and he loved it. It was amazing to see them dance and sing, although we didn't stay for the whole performance because of the heat. There was beautiful things for sale. I bought those long feather earrings you see me wearing in the second picture. I also bought this native sterling + turquoise ring. I love it, i can't wait to show you. Aren't their costumes incredible!? I wish i had taken more pictures. Oh well, next year ! The native American culture is so beautiful, I wanted to be Pocahontas by the end of the day.

I recently found an Etsy shop with so many pretty things in it, that i didn't even know were to start. Every single piece is beautiful. They have the prettiest shades of colors, crazy shapes & materials. I love how natural and organic they look. I couldn't wait to share my interview with Kathryn, the makers of these treasures.

1. Basic info (Name, where you're from, etc)

My name is Kathryn Blackmore and I live in the North West of England.

2. When and why did you start The Vamoose?

I started The Vamoose in November last year whilst seeking employment. What began as a hobby has grown into a business and I’m looking forward to develop it further with the launch of a new online shop in July!

3. Where do you find inspiration for your jewelry?

Lately, I have found inspiration in the form of molecular shapes, Ancient Egypt, natural history and the botanical prints of Pierre-Joseph Redouté.

4. Do you collect anything?

I collect far too much and starting The Vamoose has only fueled my obsession! Apart from jewelry components, I’m most often on the hunt for vintage coral specimens, old postcards from the early 20th Century and vintage trimmings.

5. What other hobbies do you have?

I watch old French movies, spend weekends walking in Lancashire and so far this summer I have been visiting show caves in the Yorkshire Dales. I also enjoy the process of designing and making clothing, although I never create them for myself.

6. What handmade possession do you most cherish?

A hand painted jewelry box given to me as a child.
